The place
A Cape May County borough between the Atlantic Ocean and the salt marshes.
Stone Harbor occupies the southern portion of Seven Mile Island, the barrier island it shares with Avalon. Avalon is the neighboring borough to the north. The ocean side is a dune-backed Atlantic beach. The bay side is salt marsh, with marinas and the road in from the mainland.
Streets are numbered, in the pattern used on this part of the Jersey Shore. 96th Street is the center for shopping and meals. Many visitors spend the day between a beach entrance and that downtown.
Most people arrive by car. The Garden State Parkway connects to the island from the north through Avalon, and from the south across the marsh on Stone Harbor Boulevard. Summer is the busy season, and beach tags are required then under rules set by the borough. For a fuller list of stops, see things to do in Stone Harbor.
Landmarks
Three places that orient a visit. The pictures show the shore, the downtown, and the marsh. They are not photographs of a specific rental.
96th Street is the borough’s business district. Shops, restaurants, and everyday services are concentrated on this street and the blocks beside it.
The sanctuary is a protected heronry in the oceanfront dunes, set aside for nesting birds including herons and egrets. Observe it from outside the protected area rather than walking in.
The Wetlands Institute is a coastal education and research center on Stone Harbor Boulevard, beside the salt marsh on the way into town from the mainland.
